Use Cases

The following use cases demonstrate the flexibility of EZ VPNTM solutions used in different scenarios and give EZ VPNTM customers ideas on how to easily implement and configure our products. From Corporate Remote Access to Industrial Internet-of-things (IIot) and Industrial Control Systems (ICS) below are a few use cases:

  • ACME Associates accounting firm (Case 1)

    A midsize accounting firm located in Los Angeles needs to enable its employees to work from home (WFH). The firm has special requirements and needs support from an external MSP (Manage Service Provider.) The MSP needs to remotely access the company network to perform IT assistance as well as the security company that needs to access the security cameras. This is a common request that is easily and quickly accomplished thanks to EZ VPNTM solutions.

  • ACME Automation co. OEM machine manufacture (Case 2)

    An international OEM machine manufacturing company, leader in automation solutions for food & beverage, medical, electronics, automotive, and pharmaceutical machinery has the need to remotely access the machines that are installed in various locations. ACME Automation decided to adopt EZ VPNTM as its unique remote assistance solution. They need a best in class solution to reduce costs and optimize support workflow.

ACME Associates accounting firm (Case 1)

ACME Automation accounting firm wants to adopt smart working and work from home (WFH) methodology to reduce employees' commute while increasing work flexibility. Employees need to access IT resources within the company network such as files, ERP, etc... The surveillance and security company needs to access security cameras, DVR, and ACS while a third-party IT Manage Service Provider needs access to the firm's local network devices to perform maintenance, support, and analysis of PCs, Servers, printers, scanners, and other network devices.

The requirements (C1)

The firm office is located in Los Angeles (CA), USA.

The total amount of employees expected to work remotely are: 72

Users in need of accessing the following Company's IT resources:

The ERP and the dedicated third-party tool are cloud-based services. For security reasons, these services can be accessed only from the office network. Accessing these services from outside networks is not allowed.

The firm's internet access is provided by two different carriers using a failover configuration that automatically switches internet connections from the main line to the backup line if the primary connection fails. The backup connection is provided with an hyperlan wireless line configured with a carrier-grade NAT. No public and static IP address is used for the backup line. Users need to be able to access the office resources even when the main line is down.

It is expected that the maximum concurrent users connected to the company IT resources will not exceed 20 users.

The firm requires a high level of security due to its type of business and confidential information that it handles while keeping a low technical impact on the users.

Installation and configuration of the solution must not impact the current network infrastructure or cause any interruption of the services. Also, the MSP and the security company need a VPN solution that is not dependent on the mail local server and can always guarantee access to the local network.

The solution adopted (C1)

EZ VPNTM can provide a solution that perfectly meets all customer’s needs.

The EZ BoxTM Enterprise model starter kit has been chosen for this application. The 1GB/s ethernet ports will ensure high speed and response. The metal case and the possibility to mount the device on DIN rail delivers a robust solution which is one of the customer’s main requests.

To satisfy the number of potential concurrent connections, the annual Enterprise plan has been chosen.

For a simple access interface and to guarantee the highest level of security, EZ VPNTM recommends using its EZ ConnectTM Suite client solution.

In order not to change the current network infrastructure and not to create an interruption of service the Bridge Mode configuration has been selected.

EZ Box installation (C1)

  • Unbox the EZ BoxTM device,
  • Connect the Eth1 port into the main switch from which you'll be able to reach all required subnet,
  • Connect the power cable,
  • Turn on the EZ BoxTM.

Once the EZ BoxTM has been turned ON, it will automatically aquire an IP address from the local DHCP service.

Take note of the device ID (MAC address) which is listed on the device bottom label or on the outside of the packaging.

Let's proceed with the adoption of the device.

Please note that, for security reasons, if the device is new and this is the very first time you Adopt your EZ BoxTM, the Adoption procedure must be executed within 5 minutes from when the box has been turned on and it is online. In case you need to repeat the Adoption procedure, please power OFF the device for 2 minutes and turn it ON again. After that, you will be able again to adopt your new EZ BoxTM device.

Login to management interface (C1)

Log in to the management interface. Check the Getting Started section of the IOconTM documentation to learn how to Sign Up to the EZ VPNTM management interface.

To log in to EZ VPNTM management interface, proceed as follow:

  1. Click Log in into EZ VPNTM management page.

  1. Type your EZ VPNTM account's email address and password.
  2. Click Log in button.

EZ Box adoption (C1)

The adoption of the EZ BoxTM is a procedure that is required only for the first time you use a new EZ BoxTM device.

For more information on how to adopt a new EZ BoxTM, please review the Adoption section of IOconTM documentation.

  1. Click Adopt your EZ Box menu.

  1. In the EZ BoxTM Name field type: EZBOX2

  2. In the EZ BoxTM ID filed type the ID of the device you are trying to adopt.

  3. Type the Activation code you have received via email from EZ VPNTM when you purchased the device. You can also find this information in your secure area of EZ VPNTM shop.

  4. Click Next to proceed to the next step.

  1. In the Preferred geographic area, section select North America since the EZ BoxTM is being installed in Los Angeles.
  2. Click Next button to proceed to the next step.

  2. Click Adopt button to adopt the EZ BoxTM.

Create the users (C1)

  1. Click Adopted EZ Boxes menu to show the list of the adopted devices.
  2. Click Users button to create the user.

  1. In the Username field, type the email address of the user.
  2. In the Alias field, type the name of the user.
  3. Click Create certificate button to create the user.

The above user creation steps need to be repeated to create users for all companies and third-party partners.

Define additional remote networks (C1)

In the next steps, we will define the networks that the EZ BoxTM can reach and what network each user will be granted access to.

  1. Click Adopted EZ Boxes menu to show the list of the adopted devices.
  2. Click Settings button to create view EZ BoxTM configuration.

If PCs, printers, and scanners are configured in a different subnet than the network on which the EZ BoxTM is configured, the EZ BoxTM needs to know in which other networks the traffic should be routed to.

  1. In the Network alias field type "PC Network" to name this network.
  2. In the Remote network, type "192.168.60.0" which is the network in which the PC, printers and scanners are connected.
  3. In the Remote netmask, select "255.255.255.0 (/24)" subnet related to the above network.
  4. Uncheck the users that belong to the y third party Security company. They don't need to access the PC Network, just the security cameras.
  5. Click Add button to create the above network.

Repeat the steps above to create the "Security Camera" and "Access Control System" networks.

  1. In the Network alias field, type "Security Camera" to name this network.
  2. In the Remote network type "192.168.200.0" which is the network in which the cameras and security DVR are configured.
  3. In the Remote netmask select "255.255.255.0 (/24)" subnet related to the above network.
  4. Uncheck all users with the exception of the users that belong to the third party Security company. In this case, only the Security company needs remote access to the Security cameras network.
  5. Click Add button to create the above network.

  1. In the Network alias field type "Access Control System" to name this network.
  2. In the Remote network type "192.168.210.0" which is the network in which the ACS devices are configured.
  3. In the Remote netmask select "255.255.255.0 (/24)" subnet related to the above network.
  4. Uncheck all users with the exception of the users that belong to the third party Security company. Only the Security company needs remote access to ACS devices.
  5. Click Add button to create the above network.

The EZ BoxTM device is connected in the same network on which servers are connected, for this reason, the third-party security company by default has access to this network.

In order to deny the Security company to access the server’s network proceed as follow:

  1. Click the Magnify glass button.

Define additional Internet networks (C1)

Two important services (ERP, dedicated third-party tool) that the company uses are not located in the company network but are instead provided with a SaaS (Software as a Service) solution on the cloud.

For security reasons, these services can only be accessed from inside the company network. From the EZ BoxTM configuration it is possible to forward over the company network the internet request to access the SaaS cloud services that are coming from the remote user.

To properly configure this feature, proceed as follow:

  1. In the additional internet networks, click + button to create a network.

The ERP resides on AWS Cloud with one public IP address only (52.94.xxx.xxx).

  1. In the Network alias field type "Amazon AWS server" as the name of this network.
  2. In the Internet network field, type "52.94.xxx.xxx" which is the public IP address of the ERP on the AWS cloud.
  3. In the Internet netmask field, select "255.255.255.255 (/32)" subnet related to the above server.
  4. Check all user's accounts to grant access to the company’s users and uncheck all third-party users that may not want to have access to the ERP service.
  5. Click Add button to create the above network.

The firm's special tool service resides on Google Cloud. We assume that the special tool has been assigned one public IP address only (108.59.xxx.xxx).

  1. In the Network alias field, type "Google Cloud Server" to name this network.
  2. In the Internet network, type "108.59.xxx.xxx" which is the public IP address of the Special tool on the Google cloud.
  3. In the Internet netmask select "255.255.255.255 (/32)" subnet related to the above server.
  4. Check all user's accounts to grant access to company users and uncheck all the third-party company users that may not want to have access to Google Cloud.
  5. Click Add button to create the above network.

Install EZ Connect client in users' PC (C1)

All users that have been configured, have received an email with the invitation to register an EZ VPNTM account.

When registered, they just need to download EZ ConnectTM Suite client, install and run the software. Once the user is connected via VPN using EZ ConnectTM Suite client, he or she will be able to see the EZ BoxTM device to which they have been granted access.

Conclusions (C1)

Thanks to EZ VPNTM solutions ACME Associates accounting firm is able to let employees work from home while allowing network access to the third party MSP and Security company. Each user will be able to access only the network and devices of their interest. Moreover, the following improvements have been also achieved:

  • High availability: remote access is working also if the main internet connectivity is down. EZ BoxTM can switch automatically to the backup line without the need to be reconfigured.
  • Simplification: with EZ ConnectTM Suite client, users are able to connect to their office services with ease.
  • High security: EZ BoxTM is based on OpenVPN technology which is used and debugged daily by millions of users around the world.
  • Quick and affordable implementation: what normally required days of implementation and configuration was accomplished in just minutes which resulted in a high savings in specialized man-hours and hardware cost.

ACME Automation co. OEM machine manufacture (Case 2)

An Italian based international OEM machine manufacturing company who is the leader in the production of automation solutions for food & beverage, medical, electronics, automotive, and pharmaceutical machinery has decided to adopt EZ VPNTM as its unique remote assistance solution. ACME Automation has subsidiaries in Germany, USA, Brazil, China and Australia, and they need a best-in-class solution to reduce customer support costs and optimize workflow.

The company has just launched a new line of high tech automation machines that are exported to several customers worldwide. The engineering and service departments want to equip the machines with a modern remote assistance solution that is easy to manage, configure, as well as deliver a top level of security.

The requirement (C2)

ACME Automation has requested several minimum requirements to implement this solution:

  • Industrial grade hardware.

    The rough environment where the machines will be installed requires special attention for the presence of dust and the possible elevated working temperature.

  • High connection availability.

    Where the machines will be installed, internet connectivity is not reliable and they need the possibility of connecting to the internet using a mobile network. The rough environment where machines may be installed cannot assure a reliable internet connection. Machines need also to be equipped with mobile connectivity that automatically switches on if the main internet ethernet connection is not available.

  • Ready to go.

    Configuration of the devices must self adapt to the local network environment where the machine will be installed.

  • High reliability.

    In the case of a hardware fault, the recovery of the service must require less than one day.

  • High security.

    All field devices need to be isolated. For security reasons and to avoid any potential risks caused by Ransomware viruses, devices inside the machine control panel must not be able to access the internet.

  • Groups support team.

    ACME Automationsupport team is composed of different groups- Internal support team and external support partners. The external support partners are authorized to view only selected devices within the machine’s control panel:

    ACME HMI co. supports HMI devices.

    ACME Cam co. supports Camera based quality systems.

The solution adopted (C2)

Based on ACME Automation requirements, EZ VPNTM proposed to adopt the IOconTM solution with the IOG1TM 4G hardware.

The device perfectly covers the industrial-grade requirement by ACME Automation.

IOG1TM 4G is able to connect with both ethernet and worldwide 2G/3G/4G mobile networks with its integrated global modem. The global SIM card, which comes included with the IOG1TM hardware, has no recurrent costs. IOG1TM also has an automatic failover feature between the ethernet port and the 4G mobile connectivity which makes this solution ideal for locations with unstable internet connectivity.

Thanks to the cloud-based configuration that EZ VPNTM offers, there is no need to backup or make a copy of the configuration to a USB key. The configuration is automatically deployed from the cloud over the internet to the devices.

ACME Automation was impressed by the flexibility of the device and by the fast replacement procedure offered by EZ VPNTM. In case of a faulty device, ACME Automation just needs to replace the device with a new one and communicate the EZ BoxTM ID of the new and faulty device to the EZ VPNTM support team. The entire configuration of the faulty device will automatically be deployed to the new one over the internet. No changes in the configuration are required. The replacement requires just a few minutes with the consequent saving of the ACME Automation support team resources.

IOconTM fully supports users and groups configuration features that allow ACME HMI and ACME CAM companies to access the machines to perform remote maintenance while keeping the highest security and privacy standard required by ACME Automation.

Information needed to configure IOG1 EZ Box

  • The name of ACME Automation customer is an Italian company by the name of: "PASTA Alfredo SPA".

  • The IOG1TM EZ BoxTM will be pre-configured at ACME Automation production site and shipped along with the machine to the customer site. Once at the customer site, IOG1TM EZ BoxTM will auto adapt its WAN interface to the local settings.

  • The machine will be installed in Europe.

  • IP addresses of the network (WAN) on which the machine will be installed are assigned automatically by the local DHCP service.

  • IP addresses of the local network (LAN) are assigned statically to each machine device (PLC, HMI, cameras). The IP range is: 192.168.150.0/24

  • HMI IP address is 192.168.150.20, it uses port 80/TCP and needs to be also accessed from the customer’s network.

  • Camera IP address is 192.168.150.30, it uses port 1935/TCP and needs to also be accessed from the customer’s network.

  • The users that need to remotely access the machine need to be arranged in groups. Also, some users that need to access the EZ BoxTM device for support belong to third party companies.

  • The machine support team needs to access field devices using Wi-Fi. IP from 192.168.150.200 to 192.168.150.254 can be used to assign to the Wi-Fi connecting PCs.

EZ Box installation (C2)

Unbox the EZ BoxTM IOG1 4G device, install both 4G and Wi-Fi antennas, connect the Eth1 port (WAN) to the main switch where DHCP and internet connection is available. Connect the Eth0 port (LAN) to the machine switch where all the other devices are connected (PLC, HMI, cameras, etc), connect the power cable, and turn on the EZ BoxTM.

Once the EZ BoxTM has been turned ON it will automatically acquire an IP address from the local DHCP service.

Take note of the IOG1TM device ID (MAC address) which is located in the bottom label of the device or on the IOG1TM box.

Let's proceed with the adoption of the device.

  1. Click Adopt your EZ Box menu.

  2. In the EZ BoxTM ID field, type the device ID you retrieved from the device label.

  3. Enter the Activation code you have received from the EZ VPNTM when you purchased the device.

  4. Click Next to proceed to the next step.

  1. In the Preferred geographic area section, select Europe since the EZ BoxTM is going to be installed in Italy.
  2. Click Next button to proceed to the next step.

In order not to expose the machine to the internet and to the local network the Router Mode network topology needs to be selected.

  1. Select Create a new isolated network (Router mode).
  2. In the IP Address field, type 192.168.150.1. This is the IP address assigned to the LAN interface of the device.
  3. In the Netmask select "255.255.255.0 (/24)" subnet mask.
  4. Click Adopt button to adopt the EZ BoxTM.

Create Groups (C2)

ACME Automation needs to organize the users by groups.

To create groups:

  1. Click My users menu.
  2. Click Groups option.
  3. Click Add group button.

  1. In the Group name, type "PASTA Alfredo SPA - PLC"

This is the group of ACME Automation users who access VPN to manage the PLC. 2. Click Create group button to save the configuration.

This is the group of ACME HMI Co. users who access VPN to manage the HMI system. 2. Click Create group button to save the configuration.

Create Users (C2)

Now that the groups have been created, it is time to create the users.

  1. Click My users menu.
  2. Click Users option.
  3. Click Add user button.

Each user will be created and assigned to a specific group.

  1. In the Username field, type "user01@acmeautomation.com"
  2. In the Alias field, type "USERS01 (ACME Automation)"
  3. In the Select groups section, click "PASTA Alfredo SPA - PLC" group.
  4. Click Create user button to create the user and assign it to the group.

Repeat the above steps for each user that needs to be created and assigned to "PASTA Alfredo SPA - PLC" group.

  1. In the Username field, type "user01@acmehmi.com"
  2. In the Alias field, type "USERS01 (ACME HMI Co.)"
  3. In the Select groups section, click "PASTA Alfredo SPA - HMI" group.
  4. Click Create user button to create the user and assign it to the group.

Repeat the above steps for each user that needs to be created and assigned to "PASTA Alfredo SPA - HMI" group.

  1. In the Username field, type "user01@acmecam.com"
  2. In the Alias field, type "USERS01 (ACME Cam Co.)"
  3. In the Select groups section, click "PASTA Alfredo SPA - CAMERAS" group.
  4. Click Create user button to create the user and assign it to the group.

Repeat the above steps for each user that needs to be created and assigned to "PASTA Alfredo SPA - CAMERAS" group.

Once groups and users have been created, the configuration appears into the group's list:

  1. Click My users menu.
  2. Click Groups option.

Assign groups to the EZ Box (C2)

  1. Click Adopted EZ Boxes menu.
  2. Click Users button.

  2. Click Assign Group button to assign the group to the EZ BoxTM device.

Repeat the above steps to assign all the other groups to the EZ BoxTM device.

Configure Wi-Fi Access Point (C2)

Machine-side support operators need to access field devices easily and conveniently. EZ BoxTM IOG1TM 4G is equipped with an access point Wi-Fi module. To facilitate access to the users the DHCP service will be also configured.

  1. Click Adopted EZ Boxes menu.
  2. Click Settings button.

  2. Type WPA2 Password.
  3. Click Update button to save the configuration and enable Wi-Fi.

Enable port forwards (C2)

PASTA Alfredo SPA customers need to access HMI and Camera devices from the customer network. EZ BoxTM is equipped with this feature to allow customers network users to access field devices in a safe way.

For each service a port forward configuration needs to be set up.

In the LAN Settings:

  1. Click + button in the Port forwards section.

  2. In the WAN public port field, type "80".
  3. In the LAN private port field, type "80".
  4. In the LAN destination IP field, type "192.168.150.20".
  5. In the Protocol allowed section, select TCP only.
  6. Click Add button to create the port forward.

  2. In the WAN public port field, type "1935".
  3. In the LAN private port field, type "1935".
  4. In the LAN destination IP field, type "192.168.150.30".

In order to be able to connect using the 4G mobile connection, we need to enable this feature.

In case WAN ethernet is disconnected or the internet conenction is not available at the customer network, the 4G modem is automatically used (failover function).

To enable 4G mobile device module, proceed as follow:

  1. Click Adopted EZ Boxes menu.
  2. Click Enable 4G button.

The users that need to access the EZ BoxTM can now install EZ ConnectTM Suite Client. Once they login into the EZ ConnectTM client, the machine to which they are granted access, will automatically appear in the client.

Conclusions (C2)

IOconTM with IOG1TM 4G device is the perfect EZ VPNTM solution for all companies that need a state-of-the-art remote assistance service that us easy to configure, flexible, and secure.

ACME Automation is satisfied with the high results achieved with the adoption of the IOconTM solution. Moreover, the following improvements have also been achieved:

  • High availability: the ethernet to 4G to ethernet automatic failover guarantee that the machines are always available.
  • Industrial oriented solution: Users and Groups configuration let OEM and third party partners work together with no conflicts. With up to 5 concurrent connections per EZ BoxTM device, users are free to connect to the machine any time they need.
